The Cabela's SPT HD Gambrel System uses a 4x4 hoist with a 7:1 gear ratio to lift your load up smoothly and easily. This system allows you to hoist big game animals up with ease on the gambrel made of 10mm steel and height isn't an issue as there is 60-feet of 8mm polypropylene rope to use. The system features slide prevent technology to hold your animal in place. This beast of a gambrel system can lift up to 4,000-pounds. Is that a typo? No, Cabela's says the weight capacity on this thing is 4,000-pounds. Excessive for a manual hand-pull system? Maybe. But more is always better, right? Who is going to complain about some extra muscle. You should be able to lift up any animal(s) you tag and bag afield with no issue. Now, candidly, I can't vouch for this hefty claim of a 4,000 pound weight capacity as I've only used this Cabela's SPT HD Gambrel System to hoist a couple of whitetail bucks up that were in the 150 to 200 pound range. That said, I have no doubt it would be great for bigger game like elk and moose and would also be great for hogs, mule deer, pronghorns, bears and anything else you are hunting. Now, if you are going to put that 4,000 pound weight limit to the test, make sure you have an adequate support to hang it from, I don't think your garage rafters are going to cut it - something like a branch from one of those Giant Sequoias out in California should work!
A gambrel isn't a big ticket item like a bow or rifle, it's not a fancy piece of equipment like your binoculars or scope and it's not something you'll use every day like your camo. However, the case can be made that it should be an essential piece of hunting equipment. A good gambrel system easily and securely lifts your game off the ground keeping it clean from debris and out of reach of critters. A gambrel makes it possible to hang your animal as it ages and makes it easier and cleaner to skin than it would be on a table or on the ground. Plus, it makes processing your meat simple as you have easy, 360-degree, access to your carcass as you work. For less than $50 on a piece of equipment that will work for you season after season, it's a smart buy! Check it out.
